Don't get me wrong; I am a huge Scarpetta fan, but this is neither novel nor story. It is a stream of consciousness, full of anger, and repetitive in every context. I wouldn't mind a walk through Kay or Lucy's emotions but to do so over and over and over - page after page - with no new insights is just....well it is just plain boring.

Additionally, Kay is not a likable person. Did I just not notice this before? I could go on and on, but you get the point. I've read every one of the Scarpetta series and, tho I am unsure if I've read this one before, I am so sorry I wasted money and time on it. Please don't make the same mistake.

I agree with the other reviewers that this book is better than what I've come to expect from Cornwell. In fact, I too had decided not to buy any more of her books but, each time she comes out with a new Scarpetta, I just can't help myself!

This one is better than the last few. But at the end I found myself dangling. More specifically, without revealing too much of the story, in the first part of the book, a great deal of time is spent developing story lines for two characters, a CNN talk show host, Hannah Starr, and an old nemesis of Benton's, Warner Agee. But more than half way through the book these characters sort of disappear without so much as a "by your leave." For instance, just when the reader is sharing Scarpetta's dismay about Starr stealing her BlackBerry, which isn't password protected yet full of important, private information, Scarpetta finds the device and discovers . . . it has never been opened. Exit Starr, stage left, and as for Agee, his ending is never adequately explained and is simply bizarre (as is Benton's reaction to his enemy's demise). All in all, these weird plot developments just leave the reader scratching his/her head saying "huh?" Worse, the twist of who is really "the bad guy," putting Scarpetta in the path of danger once again, is so undeveloped as to be unbelievable.

Cornwell does do a pretty good job of back-filling some information that she missed in earlier books so if you've read the earlier books you may be somewhat mollified. But the promise of the first half of the book is shattered by the weak second half and crowded with unnecessary subplots that do little except distract.

I'm really going to try to avoid the next Scarpetta book.
Author Cornwell's often challenging formula of complaining characters, convoluted plots, and random pacing is tweaked a little in "Scarpetta", as some rare and welcome warmth is seen among the supporting cast, the plot is a little more compelling and easier to follow than recent entries, and the central character herself is presented a little more multi-dimensionally. On that last point, Dr. Kay actually jokes once or twice and even displays a sensual side. Saints preserve us!

Actually, I'm one of the few readers who didn't mind the way things were before, admiring Ms. Cornwell for writing the kinds of stories she wanted to write without regard for slick readability and other lowest common denominator elements. Still, it was nice to see an injection of actual cameraderie among the central cast of Kay, Benton, Marino, and Lucy, and well as some eventual individual happiness for each.

In addition to the decent central mystery (did troubled police suspect Oscar Bain brutally kill his girlfriend or did someone else do it?), there's a subplot involving an internet gossip site that adds a little fun to the mix. A well-staged final confrontation scene and a moody, effective epilogue (set in the famous New York eatery, "Elaine's"), brings it all to a satisfying close.

Another one or two like this and I might refuse to go back to the way things were before, as "Scarpetta" has shown that it's possible for this series to showcase tough, edgy stories without the central core characters hating themselves and each other.
The book is very interesting. It makes Kay a little more human nut I feel they are picking on her. The last book and this book concentrate on her personal like more. I feel that the writer made her more stuck up and that is not Kay Scarpetta!! She is incredibly smart but she is not stuck up. Anyway, this book was a great read!! Loved the story plot!! So far all of the Kay S carpetta books are Awesome!!!☺
I'm a huge fan of the Scarpetta novels, but this one left me wanting. The back and forth action between 2 scenes happening simultaneously was a bit off-putting. A little of that would have gone a long way.

I actually had to force myself to finish reading this one. It won't stop me from reading the rest of the series though. I'm hopeful that the remaining books will return to a more engaging writing style.
I have read Patricia Cornwell since her very first book and this one was the worst book she has written. I skimmed it after a while because it just droned on and on. I never could finish the book. I usually finish every book I start, but not this one. Sorry Scarpetta!
The Scarpetta stories are starting to lose their pizzazz, IMO. I used to really enjoy them, the mysteries, the bits of personal stories, etc., but in recent years I haven't been finding them nearly so interesting or fun to read. Maybe it was when messed up things between Scarpetta and Marino, seemed like everything has gone downhill since then...
