What an incredibly fascinating yet touching story this is!Last Light Falling opens on the fifteenth birthday of twins, Arena and Gabe Powers, whose parents were killed in a tragic car crash six years previous. Although still trying to accept the passing of their parents, the story is told through the voice of Arena. We find out early that the twins first lived with their Mother’s sister until she had a nervous breakdown. After a year in the system, they were then taken in by a couple who had tragically lost their fifteen year old daughter – by way of being “collateral damage resulting from a gang dispute”. Since the twins were home schooled in their early childhood, it wasn't until they attended public school in second grade that they learned how poor they were and what it meant. Growing up, Arena’s Uncle Finnegan had taught Arena self-sufficiency, including the art of warfare and how to be invisible to the enemy. This is just the beginning of the unfolding of an incredible story that takes place in the year 2053. What I found so fascinating about this apocalyptic story is how real to life it just may be due to events such as a crashed US economy among other concerns of current day.
The details included in so many different events takes incredible research or a very expansive background on the author’s part. Due to the brilliant realistic events that unfold, this story has a tendency of staying in your mind long after you finish it, which is a good thing.
I highly recommend this book to all. I am blown away with the level of insight and intelligence to be able to write such a highly sophisticated unfolding of what very well could be, actual events.

“Why would someone like yourself come to my aid? I’m just an old, withering man who has nothing to offer” he says.
“And I’m a broken girl who wants nothing to take. Look into my eyes. What do you see?”
I've always been a fan of books threading the dystopian & post-apocalyptic genre, and this book never fails to exceed my expectations. First off, the story line is amazingly unique and hauntingly evocative at the same time. It is truly an epitome of a true page-turner. Every detail is intricately described, that you’ll almost feel you’re one of the characters and everything is happening around you. The action sequences are to die for (literally!). The author really did a great job when it comes to research, because he was able to portray dangerous and yet plausible scenes effectively. The protagonists, Arena & Gabriel Power, despite their unbelievable gifts are amazingly exemplified as humans. You can feel their happiness, pain, fear, anger and rage, which are all basic human emotions. The rest of the characters are well-developed and as you go along you’ll realize that everyone plays an important part in keeping the story intact.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wanted more than just a post-apocalyptic story. This would definitely make you awake for hours not only because of the utterly gripping scenes, but because you wouldn't dare to put it down once you open its pages.
A dystopian fantasy set in the United States of 2053, this is a story about a teenage girl and her twin brother’s struggle to save the world from destruction. Arena and Gabe are twins who were orphaned at a young age and are alone in the world. They find that their matching birthmarks have a greater meaning when they receive a letter from their uncle telling them that they must fulfill their destiny of saving the world. The world that Arena and Gabe inhabit is one thrown into chaos by decades of famine, plagues and natural disasters. As they receive the letter, they also learn that these woes were not accidental they are the result of God’s wrath and worse is to come. In order to set the world right and save humanity from annihilation, Arena and Gabe must do battle with evil itself.
This is definitely a Christian-themed book. It uses biblical (particularly New Testament) references throughout and is based on Judeo-Christian beliefs. It is definitely not, however, a book that preaches or tries to convert. Rather, it is an adventure/fantasy that also has the ability to be heart wrenching and touching…A rare thing in many fantasy novels. Arena and Gabe are lovable, multi-faceted characters who I immediately identified with and had great empathy for. I found the book incredibly engrossing not just for the plot twists and story about saving the world but because of my feeling of connection with the 2 main characters. I found it impossible not to root for them. The world of 2053 and the story line here are fascinating, but without the well-drawn characters of Arena and Gabe, they wouldn't be enough to make this book such an absorbing and captivating thriller.
