The heirs of Lovecraft.

So, it seems that Lovecraft was not simply a writer with social anxiety issues; rather, he was writing a secret history of a secret world that his descendant would have to unravel.

Dan Carter is a New York detective who found a serial child killer. The child killer was using the children for research into the true nature of the world. Because Carter's partner immediately killed himself after killing the child murderer, Carter took early retirement and went into the private investigation business. Not long, thereafter, Carter mysteriously finds himself as the owner of a bookstore in Providence, Rhode Island, where Emily Lovecraft - HP's granddaughter - works.

The mystery of the child killer continues to haunt Carter as he is brought into a new set of mysteries, beginning with the murder of a college professor who is improbably drowned in his car while it is parked at the college parking lot. Carter's investigations lead him to an obnoxious mathematician and an inbred community located at Waite's Bill and, ultimately, to a threat to our reality.

The characters of Carter and Lovecraft are well-drawn. Over the course of the book, they develop as a team, each contributing their strength and insights to the resolution of the mystery. Clearly, we have the beginning of a continuing team-up.

The reader ought to suspect that another book is in the works from the conclusion, which seems to suggest that the original world that H.P. Lovecraft knew before he mystically fixed the world into a pattern of science and reason.

This is a thoroughly contemporary book. Emily Lovecraft is African-American, notwithstanding H.P.'s notorious racism. Carter is constantly dropping analogies to films, and there are several obligatory urban elite shots at the NRA. Howard also nicely works in classic Lovecraftian elements, such as the hidden cultists and half-human/half-inhuman mixed breeds.

The book is fun and inventive. The piece that stays with me is the ending where the veil of reality is stripped away so as to suggest that we've all been living an illusion. All in all, this is nice spin-off of the Lovecraft universe.

Carter Lovecraft A Novel Jonathan L Howard 9781250060891 Books Reviews

This book was pretty much a page-turner for me. I really enjoyed the two main characters, Carter and Lovecraft. And, making Lovecraft a black descendant of the racist H.P. Lovecraft was a stroke of humorous genius.

The novel started out with a bang and continued to move well right through to the (almost) end.

There was a lot of mystery, action, and even some quite good horror. As a very long term H. P. Lovecraft fan, it was not a disappointment.

What I did not like was the ending. I won't post a spoiler, but to me, the ending was confusing and not at all satisfying. The first 90+ % of the novel would rate 5 stars. But, after the final disappointment, I could only give it 3 stars.
Review CARTER & LOVECRAFT by Jonathan Howard

I am so totally impressed with CARTER & LOVECRAFT very faithful to the master, and expands the Mythos in an unexpected direction. I love to read of science, and of metaphysics tautly combined with science. I won't go into too much detail, so as not to spoil the many surprises; suffice it to state, if you love Lovecraft, or love the Mythos, you will surely be awestruck.

For those who aren't Lovecraft fanboys and fangirls, let me say that Jonathan Howard is a superb novelist. Despite the very serious nature of the plot, his tone is laid back, he treats the horrors so subtly, so that they really are startling and frightening because so unexpected! I have in mind several particular scenes, exquisitely undertaken. Jonathan Howard definitely is firmly established in the Lovecraft Mythos pantheon.

I am delighted to discover CARTER & LOVECRAFT. I can't imagine anyone not loving this novel, and I am ecstatically anticipating the release of the sequel in November!
The story is, at times, quite bizarre, and the language has a cloying intimacy. I am particularly attuned to descriptions of drowning because my adult son died this way. I often wonder what it had been like for him. After reading Jonathan Howard's account, I had to put the book aside. The affect his writing had upon my very psyche was profound.

H. P. Lovecraft occupies a rarified stratum in the literary world. His writing engendered a mythos latched onto by any number of writers from those who wrote contemporaneously to those writing now, in the twenty-first century. Readers unfamiliar with his stories will see the name Lovecraft and immediately think porn, or the name Linda Lovelace will spring to mind. Anyone who is a serious reader of genre fiction will respond to such suggestions in the negative, and, usually with, at the very least, a touch of scorn.

At first blush, CARTER & LOVECRAFT is police detective turned PI dime novel the likes of which have been around for decades. However, it doesn't take long to realize that this is no John D. McDonald or Mickey Spillane pulp.

I hate spoilers, and saying more about the actual story would, of necessity, be riddled with them. If you want to know who the eponymous Carter and Lovecraft are, you need to pick up a copy and read about them for yourself. I will say that CARTER & LOVECRAFT was a totally satisfying read, no cliffhanger… a complete novel in every way. That is a refreshing change in a literary world where it seems that far too many books are part of a series. Yet, there is just enough wiggle room here to trigger a sequel or two. Should that ever happen, I will happily read such further adventures.
