A remarkable little book - for anyone wishing to know what Loving God is, how one comes to it, and how one can achieve it. As in all Saint Bernard's works there is a clarity and simplicity attached to his explanations unmatched by anyone I have read. The Saint brings humor and sincerity - especially his - to this important theological discussion. As in most of his works he is writing to some person based on a question in need of an answer and explanation. Saint Bernard was writing not so much for himself as for others - which makes his work so much more understandable. After defining the Love of God he goes on to discuss the four degrees of Love . I feel that most people will really enjoy and benefit from the discussion. There is a great chapter on the need of the soul for it's body - a concept that most Moderns have never seen before but is a core tenet to Catholic belief. In summary, Saint Bernard is timeless in his writings - speaking to us from the Middle Ages he has much to contribute to our life in this century.Product details

On Loving God Bernard of Clairvaux 9781631740497 Books Reviews
I read this short book quickly but found many statements that lived a me up and inspired me to live Good more fully for who he is and not just for the blessings he gives. Take your time and enjoy this well known classic.
A good read for adoration time when feeling the love of God around me and all those that have come to spend time with Our Lord, Jesus Christ.
I do not find an ( I ) in St. Bernard's writing, the implication is that he ascribes to the other saints that he quotes. It is amazing reading from someones writings in the 11th Century. What a mind and soul, we need someone like that around today.
Bernard de Clairvaux, a Catholic mystic, speaks with a clear voice, allowing the reader to easily follow. Clarivaux is one of the most accessible of the mystics, addressing the transcendent with a easy and certain demeanor. This book is highly recommended for those seeking a deeper spiritual life.
There was no heart in it from Bernard himself. Perhaps I am judging him too harshly, from a time post-psychology, wherein I have come to expect less quotation of scripture for WHY we SHOULD love God, and more sharing of the love of the author for God. I mean the showing of Bernard's love, as an example for his readers. Still, it was a good read...
A must read. After the Gospels and The imitation of Christ this should be number three on the list.
This book goes into depth about why we should love God, what are the rewards for loving God and why the Christian has so much more of a reason to love god. The book is also about Love itself.
I ran into this book on the web site Booksshouldbefree Loved the MP3 file. I loved it so much I bought the book!
The book also illustrates the Genius of St Bernard of Clairvaux. I know almost nothing about the man but this book tells me about his love for God and his Genius.
If you want to Love God then you got to read the book. This book is a true treasure!
Tackling the subject of loving God, (St.) Bernard of Clairvoux, 'On Loving God' reaches such depths comparable to (St.) Teresa of Avila's Interior Castle (Dover Thrift Editions) in a shorter space and time. Ecumenical, the book has a wide Christian appeal, for his proofs are mainly from scripture, and the thrust is as accessible to most readers as Thomas Kempis's classic, The Imitation of Christ (Paraclete Essentials). In this book, he progresses persuasively to each level of potential growth we have to love God Himself.
He explains the problems that keep us away from our progress with our love of God, and he elaborates thoroughly the differences between the spirit and the flesh, using several psalms, Paul's letters, and other biblical books from Genesis to Job.
Resourceful, rich, and rewarding, 'On Loving God' can be completed in a few sittings, but also be enough to pause and reflect upon for many additional hours to come.
